From the Classroom to the Community: How One VOAMASS Social Worker Is Redefining Healing
At VOAMASS, we know that real change happens when people are empowered to bring their full selves to the work. That’s exactly what Marcel McClain, one of our mental health clinicans, does every day. Marcel works alongside a dedicated team at Men’s Hello House – Mass Ave, who bring professional expertise, cultural insight, and deep compassion.
Marcel joined VOAMASS after earning his M.S.W. from Boston College, where he was part of the Black Leadership Initiative (BLI) which is a groundbreaking program that supports Black students in developing community-centered, culturally affirming approaches to social work. His experience in BLI continues to shape how he supports clients today, especially men recovering from addiction and trauma.
“That community was the ground off of which I felt I could build my social work practice and to which I could return when I need guidance and reassurance.” Marcel said of his BLI cohort.
Through his education and now his role at VOAMASS, Marcel brings Afrofuturism and person- centered focus to his work. He focuses on connection, dignity, and the power of envisioning a better future. Whether he’s leading group sessions or one-on-one therapy, his goal is clear: help people heal in a way that honors who they are.
“I believe I have a mandate to seek the best outcomes for the people I’m charged with caring for.” Marcel said about his clients.
We’re proud to have Marcel on our team and inspired by the example he sets, not only for our organization, but for the future of social work.
