90 years of commitment, care, and opportunity
Volunteers of America of Massachusetts (VOAMASS) has provided critical social services to the people of Massachusetts since 1934.
A nonprofit organization based in Jamaica Plain, VOAMASS serves 1,800 individuals and families annually and employs nearly 200 dedicated and diverse people in 16 programs throughout Eastern Massachusetts.
We are deeply committed to improving the lives of individuals including veterans, older adults, and those who struggle with behavioral health issues, homelessness, unemployment, or involvement with the criminal legal system.
Mission and History
VOAMASS is dedicated to serving those most in need, especially those facing multiple challenges.
Our work touches the mind, body, heart, and ultimately the spirit of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
VOAMASS is the Massachusetts affiliate of Volunteers of America (VOA), a national social service organization started by Ballington and Maud Booth in 1896 in New York.
When VOA was founded, a volunteer was someone who was committed to a mission or a cause. By bringing food, medicine, and comfort to those most in need, our founders earned the name “Volunteers of America.”
While the VOA affiliates of today, including VOAMASS, are independent 501(c)(3) organizations that employ teams of clinical professionals and others, we proudly carry on the legacy of the name selected by the Booths. VOAMASS is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) to deliver a wide array of mental health and substance use disorder treatment. We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and committed to high-quality, integrated care that meets the needs of the whole person.
