AJ was in the car with his family. His sister had just overdosed. They were on their way to see her. Heartbroken, he was taking a serious look at his own life. He turned to his mom and said, “I’m still using.”

When AJ came to VOAMASS, he was surrounded by a community of support. With each moment of care, he began to heal.
“That was a great time for me. I learned a lot about myself. I learned how to grow as a person without sacrificing yourself in the process, which is something I struggled with in the past. You helped me gain confidence and learn my value in the world.”
AJ found his way to live in the light of recovery. “I’m 42 years old and for most of my life, the only identity I knew was one of a drug addict. I learned that is not my identity. It was only a previous chapter of my life. My identity continues to evolve. I’m not just one thing. I am a son. I am a hard worker. I am a good friend. I’m a great relative, and I’m somebody you’d want to have as your friend.”

“Everybody has some sort of gift they can share with the world. You just have to find your purpose and go towards it and then live your life every day inside of that purpose.”
